As one of the few remaining undeveloped waterfront areas in the central city, it is too valuable a public asset to be auctioned off for speculative development.

In complement with a future cultural district, a plan to develop the West Kowloon corridor into a green park is the most sensible and best long term interest for the legacy of the Hong Kong people. An investment in a world-class urban green park will provide many returns for the environment, public health, social benefit and tourism.

Hong Kong Alternatives believes a sensible and sustainable solution for the harbourfront is necessary to ensure the future health and prosperity of the city and people.

The People have spoken! The results of a recent public survey on “Planning for West Kowloon and the Harbour Front” conducted by The University of Hong Kong has shown that there is no broad support for the West Kowloon Cultural District as proposed by the government. The findings show Hong Kong people do not want any commercial or residential developments in the West Kowloon and Harbour Front areas. Over 80% of the respondents were in favour of developing green parks and cultural facilities on that site. The survey also showed little support for the giant canopy which the government had proposed for the WKCD.

We applaud the SAR government for its February 21 decision to scrap the three proposed developments and the canopy. However, despite reopening the planning for the WKCD, their intention is still to auction off portions of the site for speculative development. Whether in smaller portions or not, the public has expressed its desire not to see any commerical or residential development on the site. The SAR government must live up to its responsibilities and move forward based on the needs and concerns of its public citizens. A Cultural Green Park is the right legacy to leave at the WKCD.

Please visit the Hong Kong University Public Opinion Programme website to read more about the results. The full survey results are found at hkupop.hku.hk in the Research Reports section.
